Who will like it
This vibrant high acid white wine is unoaked and without MLF, making it crisp and refreshing, but is aged on the lees for four months, adding a delicious depth and complexity to the wine. The result is clean citrus flavors with white florals and white tea complemented by the region’s signature minerality and a taste of briny sea air. It pairs perfectly with seafood and salads and is beautiful drinking on its own. In tastings I conduct, even participants who swear they don’t like white wine like this wine.
Why we are highlighting this wine
First, we think all of us should become more familiar with Rías Baixas Albariño. Produced in the northwest corner of Spain, these wines are typically aromatic and fresh, with flavors ranging from citrus to mango and augmented by white florals, minerality and salty hints of the surrounding sea breezes. This specific bottle is made from 100% Albariño grapes harvested from a lowland vineyard near the sea by one of the region’s top producers. The 2016 vintage was #35 on Wine’s Spectator’s top 100 wines of 2017 and it received 90+ scores from a number of reputable reviewers. Whether you are looking to try an Albariño for the first time or love the varietal already and looking for a steal, this level of quality at under $25 a bottle is a great buy.
